Update as of 2/4/13:
The amended bill is out of the House sub-committee. The link to view the bill is http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2013/pdf/HB/0700-0799/HB0716cs.pdf . It appears that there are only minor changes from what the district communicated to parents last week. The next step is for the bill to be voted on in the House and then it goes to the Senate at which point more changes could and will take place.
Please call your representatives with concerns, specifically: 1) adequate funding, 2) impact of combined test scores and (3) keeping current Board intact. Contact information for our legislators can be found at www.msparentscampaign.org.
This past May, the Starkville School District PTA Executive Council and each school PTA voted to become the Starkville School District PTO. SSD has joined the majority of parenting groups in the U.S, 75% of which are now PTOs. As part of the National PTA, a local PTA had to remit a portion of each membership fee it collected. It was felt that those monies could be better spent in our schools and community. Each school will continue to have its own PTO chapter and the $5.00 membership fee entitles each member to join one or all chapters in the district.
Benefits that the National PTA offered, such as online parenting resources and access to expertise on children’s issues, are available at no cost through the national PTO (www.ptotoday. com). Our mission to advocate for children, enrich educational programs, support faculty and staff in their work, and collaborate with community organizations will not change, however. The Parent’s Campaign will also serve as a resource for children’s issues in the state of Mississippi.
The Official Handbook of the Mississippi PTA can be found on their website. It contains guidelines to assist you in running your PTA efficiently. Get it today!!
National PTA Convention delegates recently approved a fifty cents ($.50) increase to National PTA’s portion of the membership fee, from $1.75 to $2.25 per member. This increase is effective July 1, 2011. It is the first National dues increase since 2001.
Mississippi State PTA dues remain at $1.25.
Total State and National dues are now $3.50.
What this means to your PTA
Effective July 1, 2011, all membership dues should include the $0.50 National PTA dues increase. Units should submit dues through regular channels. PTA dues support the work of the PTA at unit, council, district, state and national levels.
Local PTA bylaws do not need to be amended to reflect the revised national portion of dues, unless the total amount of dues collected is less than the amount needed to remit through channels. If your PTA unit wishes to change the amount of dues you collect, you may vote to amend your bylaws. Read more ›
